Does Penn State Football = A Cult?
Penn State is set to announce the hiring of a new football coach, the current offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots Bill O'Brien. Many in the community including numerous former player are irate that this person isn't from the Penn State "family". The venom directed at O'Brien is stunning and embarrassing.
First off, the Penn State "family" is what helped foster the culture that led to the Sandusky scandal and made Penn State a national disgrace. The last thing they need is a Paterno disciple. Second, no prominent head coach in the country would take the job in its current state. The reaction from those associated with the program bolsters my contention that Penn State football has basically been run as an insular cult for the better part of 40 years. It is a sad state of affairs for the university.
