Nobel Peace Prize

It appears that they are now giving out Nobel Peace Prizes for talking. In that case, the Nobel committee got it right. After all, nobody talks better than The One. Maybe the Nobel's felt bad about the Olympics snub. It seems that all you have to do to get a Nobel Prize these days is to be a vocal Bush critic. Carter, Gore, Krugman and now Obama. All receive the Prize for "not being Bush".

Never in history has an individual won an award of this sort while accomplishing nothing. Obama is an empty suit and his record so far proves it. Carter was bad, but at least he had Habitat for Humanity on his resume. Gore was worse but this takes the cake. I did not think the Nobel Prize, already circling the toilet, could become any more irrelevant.

Most thoughtful people know that the Nobel Peace Prize became a farce long ago. I cannot help being angry and disgusted, but really should not be. The Prize is irrelevant and not worth paying attention to. It is like the Oscar or Grammy - largely a popularity contest or a reward for being properly liberal, not a real measure of accomplishment. An astute friend of mine had an interesting spin when he said the Nobel Prize is like a crying infant. If you pay attention to it others will as well and it will take on increasing importance. If you ignore it, the crying will eventually stop and nobody will care.

The award has generated a great deal of controversy across the political spectrum. According to reports there were audible gasps and even some boos when the announcement was made. Many in the middle and even some on the left have condemned or questioned the award. I think this may even hurt Obama as the weight of unfulfilled expectations begins to become a burden. If Obama was more politically savvy he should have considered turning it down until he at least does something. Alas, he is far too sure of his own greatness to do that.

Remember, Obama was nominated for this "bogus" award only 2 months into his presidency......
